The need to transport goods or people is part and parcel of the human development cycle. The transportation requirements vary from leisure to commercial. In the developing world access to dependable public transportation is in most cases notably absent. Many countries are unable to meet the needs of their people owing to lack of resources or weak infrastructure.
As the third world urban settlements continue to grow, the need for affordable and reliable transportation would also grow. In a 2008 report by Ajay Kumar and Fanny Barret, 'Stuck in Traffic: Urban Transport in Africa' for the Africa Infrastructure Country Diagnostic (AICD), it was estimated that in year 2000 one in three Africans lived in a city. This amount is expected to increase to one in two by 2030.
