In the 1960’s Southern California placed its permanent footprint on the world with the West Coast Surfing Explosion. Pop surfing groups such as Jan and Dean and The Beach Boys romanticized the popular culture with such hits as Surf City, Surfin USA, and Surfer Girl, and much of the lyrical focus centered on the cluster of beaches between Malibu and La Jolla. As the years passed, however, Huntington Beach, California, internationally known today as “Surf City” or the “Surfing Capital of the World”, seemed to embody the classic anthem to millions. Many feel it has stayed true to its beach town roots and has worked hard to protect its shoreline, offering some of the best surfing spots in the world. Surfing is almost a religion here. Come rain or shine, it attracts hordes of surfers on a daily basis.

BOLSA CHICA STATE BEACH

This beach was once called “Tin Can Beach” due to the excessive cans and debris. Years ago, however, the city of Huntington Beach cleaned it up, making it one of the most desired beaches in the city. It extends three miles and is situated between Sunset Beach (a small, quaint city to the north) and the northern end of the Huntington Beach Pier. It’s known for its excellent (and manageable) surf, making it the perfect location for surfing. Bolsa Chica tends to have great waves with northwest/west swells during the winter and south/Southwest swells during the summer. Depending on storm activity from Alaska (winter) or Central America or Mexico (summer) waves can range from 3 to over 10 feet high. For long-time surfer Bob Schloderer, Bolsa Chica is a surfer's paradise. “This beach has one of the more consistent wave breaks in California,” he says. “You can almost always count on great waves here.”
