Are you looking to experience history face to face? If the answer is yes, then you should pack your bags and travel to Herculaneum during your next vacation. According to A. DE Franciscis and I. Bragantini, in their illustrated guide titled Pompeii, Herculaneum and Villa Jovis in Capri: Past & Present, Herculaneum was seriously smashed during the earthquake of 62, however imperial aid came to its aid. Although Herculaneum recuperated from the earthquake, it unexpectedly was ravaged by the Vesuvius volcanic eruption of 79. Clouds of burning toxic gas along with floods of volcanic mud swept away everything in their path: people, houses, roofs and objects. Eventually, Herculaneum was buried and solidified in a compressed shelf of rock, which preserved the city as it was at the moment of the eruption. Herculaneum’s ruins were discovered accidentally in 1711 by the Prince Elboeuf, and the methodical excavation of the city began in 1738 under the instructions of King Charles of Bourbon, who also established the Academy of Herculaneum. The excavation of the city restarted in 1986.
Franciscis and Bragantini offer in their guide a detailed description of the historical places which tourists should visit in Herculaneum. Some of these archeological sites are the House of Argus, the House of the Inn, and the House of the Wooden Screen; the House of the Mosaic Atrium; the House of Stags; the Forum Baths; and the House of the Relief of Telephus.
The House of Argus, the House of the Inn, and the House of the Wooden Screen
The House of Argus is one of the largest panoramic residences in the southern side of Herculaneum. It has a main entrance and a back entrance, the former with a porch looking over the streets. The house has a columned garden, which porticoes allow the access to other rooms. Also, the house has a stylish dining room, and a second floor with bedrooms and storerooms in which were found jars of cereals, lentils, figs and oil.
